About Mark Rothko
Mark Rothko remains one of the most influential figures in twentieth-century American art. Best known for his luminous, large-scale paintings of floating fields of color, Rothko developed a distinctive visual language centered on color, light, space, and human emotion. His paintings invite viewers to slow down, look closely, and experience the emotional atmosphere created between softly defined fields of color.
The Life of Mark Rothko
Mark Rothko was born Marcus Rothkowitz on September 25, 1903, in Dvinsk, then part of the Russian Empire and now Daugavpils, Latvia. In 1913, at the age of ten, he immigrated to the United States with his mother and sister, joining family members who had already settled in Oregon. He later moved to New York, where his artistic career began to take shape.
Rothko briefly attended Yale University, beginning in 1921, but left without graduating. He subsequently moved to New York and studied at the Art Students League. During the 1920s and 1930s, he experimented with different forms of painting, including portraits, city scenes, landscapes, and figurative compositions. His early work demonstrates that his celebrated abstract style emerged gradually through decades of experimentation rather than appearing suddenly.
From Figurative Art to Abstraction
Rothko's artistic development is one of the most fascinating aspects of his career. His early paintings often contained recognizable people, buildings, landscapes, and urban environments. By the early 1940s, however, he moved increasingly toward mythological and surrealist-inspired imagery. These works contained biomorphic forms and references to ancient stories and civilizations.
